Unmanned Fighter YFQ-42A Revealed, Marking a New Era in U.S. Combat Aviation (X @OfficialCSAF)
American company General Atomics has unveiled the first functional prototype of an unmanned fighter, the YFQ-42A.
The announcement was made by General David Alvin, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, who highlighted the lethal potential and low operational cost of these autonomous aerial vehicles. According to him, these pilotless fighters will be a key element in future defense strategies, forcing adversaries to act more cautiously.
The YFQ-42A is part of the CCA program (Collaborative Combat Aircraft), which aims to develop drones capable of operating alongside manned fighters such as the F-35. These systems are expected to operate with limited autonomy, being controlled by pilots in nearby aircraft.
In addition to the General Atomics model, there is also the YFQ-44A, developed by the company Anduril. Both prototypes received new designations for combat drones, signaling a new era in military aviation.

Technical specifications of the YFQ-42A have not yet been disclosed, but it is believed to be based on the XQ-67A, an experimental drone that first flew in March 2024. The Air Force expects that by 2029, over 150 units from the CCA program will be operational, supporting reconnaissance and combat missions alongside fifth- and sixth-generation fighters.
